Working With a Long-Term Care Insurance Agent: What to Expect

A long-term care insurance agent helps you understand your options, compare coverage, and apply. There’s no fee to work with Staying Power; the insurance carrier pays us a commission. A first call takes 30 to 45 minutes with a licensed insurance agent, and there’s no obligation to buy.

Who does what?

  • The agent is the licensed individual you work with.

What happens on the first call?

The call takes 30 to 45 minutes, in three parts:

  • About you: where you want to live as you age, what matters most, and who’s in the picture

  • Your options: what care could cost, and ways to fund it

  • Your strategy: a funding strategy for aging in place, built around you

It helps to have a rough idea of your savings and retirement income, and any coverage you already have. Your spouse or partner is welcome to join.

What happens if you move forward?

You can start an application in the same conversation. Then comes underwriting; see What to Expect in Long-Term Care Insurance Underwriting. After your policy is delivered, there’s a free-look period during which you can return it. In most states it’s 30 days; in some it’s shorter. (NAIC Shopper’s Guide)

What happens after you buy?

We continue to help with your funding strategy, keep your intentions current as things change, and stay with you through the claim.

What should you ask any agent?

  • Are you licensed in my state?

  • How are you paid?

  • Which products do you offer, and who issues them?

  • What happens when I need to file a claim?

About the author

Stephanie Cheney is the founder and CEO of Staying Power and a licensed insurance agent (OK License #3004465615 · TX License #3562695). She became a caregiver at 20 and saw firsthand what caregiving asks of a family: time, career, and money. After her father died, her mother bought long-term care insurance in her 50s. When brain surgery in her 60s left her mother needing full-time care, that coverage meant Stephanie could keep working and hire help when she was away. Her mother has lived with her for about 10 years. Stephanie started Staying Power to help people plan to stay in their own homes as they age, beginning with how they'll pay for care.
